This series of work has been inspired by patisserie and reflects our ever-growing fascination with the craft of pastry chefs. There are a myriad of captivating videos on social media that reveal the ways in which they produce mind boggling concoctions, using multiple stages and layers. Enchanted by these, I experimented with materials and processes that echo their creations.
I created pieces that balance the rigid geometry and grid like patterns of industrially produced wafers, with more flowing and organic areas that reference the internal body. The relationship between control and excess is explored in the work which reflects the way food can easily become a replacement for other emotional needs.
The sculptures also allude to architectural structures: the geometry of contemporary skyscrapers made in prefabricated units and the allure of the gingerbread house in the woods.
